Tuscaloosa, AL— It’s not even close to National Signing Day and things are already getting a little strange. One of those things comes from one of Alabama’s previous commits in 4-star defensive lineman Akial Byers. Byers was committed to Alabama in 2017, but did not qualify academically which prompted him to land at Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C.
The 6’4 275 lb lineman was completely set on attending Alabama until he hit a snag with his academics. Since being at Mississippi Gulf Coast, his grades have improved enough that he wants to play Div. I somewhere this fall. It seemed as Alabama could be a good option, that is until realizing that there isn’t enough room in the 2017 class.
There has already been a little bit of an issue with 2017 top 100 defensive end Jarez Parks. Parks committed to Alabama, but found out Alabama didn’t have a spot for him. This led him to blue shirt, meaning he can be a part of the 2018 recruiting class. With that being the case for Parks, things were the same for Byers, but Byers decided to commit to Missouri instead. Byers took the Twitter to reveal his commitment.
Clearly Byers does not want to wait to play on a big field for another season. He believes its his time, which has led him to commit to Missouri. It does make sense as two of Byers teammates are committed to Missouri as well.
With Alabama losing a 2018 commit for Byers, the Tide are now down to just three commits for the class of 2018. There is plenty of time for Alabama to regain steam and land a top spot. Right now they are currently ranked #24 in the country.
