So What Ever Happened To Terrence “Mount” Cody?

By: Larry Burton

In response to another article I’ve had a lot of people ask me what ever happened to Terrence Cody. So here’s a short article just to let folks know where he is and how he’s faring.

In his prime, few Alabama players were ever as loved by the fanbase. His two blocked field goals against Tennessee in 2009 was perhaps the biggest single reason that Alabama made it into the college football championship game that they ultimately won. His legend for that and his bigger than life character will always have a place in Alabama lore.

Following his two years at Alabama after transferring in from a Jr. College, Cody was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round but never made a sack or tackle for loss in his four years in the league. He constantly battled with weight issues and by January 15th of 2015 he was cut by Baltimore and soon other problems became the focus of his life.

In February of that same year, he was arrested on a total of 15 charges that included two counts of aggravated animal cruelty involving a dog, five counts of animal abuse or neglect involving the same dog, one count of illegal possession of an alligator, five counts of animal abuse or neglect involving the alligator, one count of possession with intent to use the drug paraphernalia and one count of possession of pot. This case took up most of Cody’s 2015 and with such charges against him, no NFL team wanted to sign him.

In taking his dog to a vet for treatment in such bad condition, he started a chain reaction that changed his life. When the dog finally died, the Vet notified police and all these problems started.

Finally in November of that year he was found guilty of two drug charges, (pot and paraphernalia), two felony counts of animal cruelty and five other related charges of animal neglect or cruelty as well as having and neglecting an alligator. January of the following year, 2016, he was sentenced to nine months of jail time this pretty much ended his 2016 year. He was hoping to catch on with a team in 2017, but it didn’t happen and it appears that Cody’s football career is over.

Today he is 29 years old and his net worth including savings, real estate, cash and everything he owns is estimated to be around 1.1 million dollars. Not much to show from four years in the NFL and $3,060,000 in earnings in that time. He is out of jail now, after serving his time, does some work with his family business in Florida and is doing a lot of community service work in Alabama now and working with children. He’s not sure what his future will bring, but he says he’s learned from his mistakes and wants to be a better person. This is the last report I could find on Cody. You can watch that video here.

Terrence Cody adjusts to life after football

No one loves animals any more than I do, but I’m willing to give Cody a second chance. Everybody makes mistakes. The puzzling thing is that during all the animal cruelty to that one dog, investigators and police say that he had other dogs on his property that were in absolutely perfect condition. I knew him personally as a player at Alabama and he was always funny and kind. After one game when I was going to interview him on the field after a game, he picked me up, and I was a solid 275 ten, threw me on his shoulder and carried me into the dressing room like I was a rag doll laughing all the way. Reporters aren’t allowed in the locker room after regular season games and I had to scoot out before I got in trouble.

That’s the “Mount” Cody I will choose to remember, not the guy who served time for animal cruelty. I will file him under the guy who helped jump start the Alabama program into the dynasty it has become and while I’ll always remember than he made a mistake, that he paid dearly for it and is trying now to learn from it and be a better guy. I for one, hopes he does just that.
