Jones dominate performance not enough as Falcons lose in season opener

Julio Jones picked up where he left off last season with an excellent showing against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, this time it was in the 2018 NFL season opener on Thursday night.

Jones also picked up an “L” in the loss column. The Falcons lost another defensive struggle 18-12, but that didn’t stop Jones from snatching 10 passes for 169 yards. He also had one rush for 11 yards. All night, Julio made fantastic plays for his quarterback Matt Ryan and yet, Atlanta only managed 12 points. Ryan ended up finishing poorly, going 21/43 for 259 yards and an interception.

The offense couldn’t find Jones favorable match ups in the red zone, thanks to double teams by the Eagles secondary. Ryan tried to hit Jones for the game tying score, but the pass forced him out of the end zone as time expired.

Jones will try to continue his hot start against the Carolina Panthers next Sunday. He should feast against a mediocre Panther secondary that has historically struggled when trying to defend Jones. Remember the 300-yard game in 2016?

Finally, Calvin Ridley made his debut Thursday and finished with zero receptions on two targets. That must change for this anemic falcons offense. Ridley was drafted to compliment Julio Jones and his production is much needed. His time will soon come as he adjusts to the pro game, the rookie just needs opportunities and consistent quarterback play from Matt Ryan.
