Did the Mackey Award committee get it right with leaving Smith off?

It may not mean much for Alabama fans who are focused on this team to win a national championship; however, those that appreciate fairness will take offense to this.

In a recent article from Touchdown Alabama Magazine, Crimson Tide tight end Irv Smith Jr. was left off the finalist list for the John Mackey Award.

For an honor that is awarded to college football’s most outstanding tight end, Smith possesses better statistics than the John Mackey Foundation’s three finalist: Albert Okwuegbunam of Missouri, T.J. Hockenson of Iowa and Kaden Smith of Stanford.

The 6-foot-4, 246-pound junior from New Orleans (La.) has 613 receiving yards with seven touchdowns on 35 catches through 12 regular season games.

While he has more touchdown receptions (seven) and a higher yards per catch average (17.51) than the three finalists, Smith was not chosen.

During Wednesday’s airing of In My Own Words, Stephen Smith of TDAL Magazine discusses how Smith was robbed from being honored as a finalist and how this incident is reminiscent of the Ray Guy Award issue with former Tide specialist, JK Scott.
