Bama and Clemson Prove Playoffs Don’t Need Expansion

If there was any doubt that the playoffs needed expansion, there shouldn’t be now. No matter how teams could have been included, the same two teams would have met in the end.

The playoff system is fine.

Bama and Clemson Prove Playoffs Don’t Need Expansion

You may rightfully say that Georgia was one of the four best teams in college football that didn’t make the playoffs. But they had their chance to make it in and blew it.

You might make a case that Ohio State should have been in playoffs over Oklahoma and have some good points.

But what the first round of the college playoffs proved is that that the field does not need to be expanded to anoint a true champion. Today, Alabama and Clemson clearly and decisively proved that they are indeed the best two teams in the country and deserve the chance to play for the national championship.

It would not have mattered if six, eight or ten teams played in any imaginary playoff, the finals would still be between Alabama and Clemson.

Oklahoma never had a chance against Alabama, the game was never in doubt and only Alabama miscues and penalties, combined with the generously taking a knee at the goal line, kept the game from being a blowout.

Notre Dame, which should be Notre Don’t when it comes to playing in the big spotlight game, was once again so thoroughly embarrassed that we can only hope voters the next time realize what an overrated program that truly is. We can only hope the final vote shows this reality.

So once again, it comes down to Alabama vs Clemson version 4.0. That is the way it should be and would have been no matter how many teams were involved in the playoffs.

The system is working fine and needs no adjustment.
