Atlanta Falcons hire former Tide staffer, Tosh Lupoi at DL coordinator

Mark J. Rebilas - USA TODAY Sports

After learning some things from Nick Saban at Alabama, Tosh Lupoi went to the National Football League and served as defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2019.

According to Ian Rapoport, national insider for NFL Network, the California native is on the move again and he’s headed to the Atlanta Falcons.

The franchise has hired him to be its defensive line coordinator/run game coordinator.

During his four seasons at Alabama, Lupoi spent time as a defensive recruiting analyst, outside linebackers’ coach, co-defensive coordinator and defensive coordinator from 2014-18.

As an on-field coach, he was on three Southeastern Conference Championship teams (2015-16, 2018) and two national championship teams.

With the exception of 2018, Lupoi helped coach one of college football’s best defenses from 2015 to 2017.

Alabama allowed 15.1 points per game in 2015 and 11.9 points per matchup in 2017 – both of which were national championship seasons.

Lupoi coached elite talents such as Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, Rashaan Evans, Christian Miller and Anfernee Jennings.

He witnessed 65.5 sacks from the outside linebacker position, including two seasons of 20-plus sacks in 2015 (21.5) and 2016 (25). The Falcons get a young student of the game in Lupoi and hopefully, he will be an asset to the franchise.
