The mass media just doesn’t get the greatness of Mac Jones.

Every week all you can hear when it comes to great quarterbacks in college football, is the anointment of Trevor Lawrence from Clemson “leading all quarterbacks”. I have but one question. What exactly is he leading in?

  • Presently he’s number 11 on the total passing yards list for total yards per game
  • He’s fourth on the list in pass completion percentage
  • He’s fourth in total passing yards
  • He’s fourth in yards per attempt
  • And lastly, he’s 5th in quarterback rating

And guess who leads him in all but one of these ratings? Yes, that’s right, Mac Jones.

Mac Jones leads the nation in total quarterback ratings, leads the nation in yards per attempt and only loses out to Lawrence in the total yards passing. Last week Jones did better against one of the nation’s best defenses than Lawrence did against Georgia Tech’s 70th rated defense.

Why does Mac not get the talk that Lawrence receives?

Part of it is that Alabama is widely known for having the best stable of receivers in the nation and I guess the media thinks they must all throw it to themselves. The question is, are the Tides receivers that good because they’re so great or because they have a quarterback who always hits them in the numbers with ball or over the shoulder in perfect stride?

Another part is that Lawrence has won a championship, carrying it mostly on his shoulders, while others have yet to do that.

Yet the truth is, Jones misses less passes than any nationally leading quarterback. He has the most accurate deep ball in all of college football, hands down. And while listening to the talking press, you hear them only seem to give Lawrence special accolades as the “top quarterback”. Meanwhile, NFL scouts are making notes on Jones and see him as someone who could be “stolen” much as Patrick Mahomes was. Jones already seems like an NFL ready pocket passer who can make all the throws to any point on the field. He doesn’t make bad decisions and he has the size and smarts the NFL is looking for.

Reese Hicks, a scout for the Atlanta Falcons was heard to say that Jones could be a game changing quarterback for an NFL team. And while that may be true, of course so is Lawrence and no doubt that Lawrence may very well be the first quarterback taken in the draft. This article is certainly not to deride Lawrence, who is outstanding, but to impede on the media that there is certainly more than one great quarterback out there right now.

The media may push Lawrence to lead the Heisman talk, but Jones is certain to be invited to the party in New York this fall. While Jones is rock steady in all his stats, the truth is, it seems to fix is in for Lawrence at this point and it’s his to lose. Only a terrible outing, which seems unlikely given their very mediocre schedule, could cost him the trophy it seems.

The press is also largely ignoring that Jones is far ahead of what Jalen Hurts and even Tua Tagovailoa did in their first eight starts and each of those were thought to be Heisman finalists.

Jones didn’t even get his deserved respect from his own fans at the start of the season, when many were hoping to start the Bryce Young era and repeat the happy days of when Tua was flinging the ball all over the field, but instead now by Young.

Lastly, but very importantly, Jones is a worker, a team leader that his players love, respect and place all their trust in. He’s great academically, he’s not a “look at me” kind of player and he doesn’t have any off field issues he’s ever had to deal with. He’s just a “let’s go to work” kind of guy that would never point a finger if something did go wrong and works his butt off to get everyone else around him up to his level.

They say nobody is perfect, but I haven’t found a in flaw in Jones yet this season. Maybe the national press will also start seeing things that way too.

Nice Article Larry.     Agree the stats favor Mac ( the Knife ) Jones.  He’s proven He can take a hit and doesn’t flush & run laterally which allows too many injuries (Tua).   The only sticky thing is the Eye test...physically Mac reminds of the Montana’s, Brady’s etc. where Lawrence will prolly be beast-like once he’s filled out.   I’d sure take Mac every day & twice on Sunday’s ! Also consider our receivers are (college wise) unearthly...but on Sunday’s the NFL is full of unearthly recievers, DB’s,LB’s etc.   RTR
