If you’ve just started following Alabama football, you may be wondering why a mammoth 6-foot-7 300 plus defensive tackle was so highly coveted by Nick Saban and his staff. However, if you’ve been following Alabama recruiting for the past few years, you realize this is normal procedure for the Tide and the addition of Raekwon Davis is just another revolving door of quality defensive lineman hoping to be apart of Alabama’s NFL pipeline.
If you ask Davis why he committed, his answer is simple. “It felt like family. With Coach Saban, he’s the kind of coach to get me to the next level.”
If by next level he means the NFL, choosing to roll with the Tide was a smart choice. With two seasons of high school football still to play, the three-star DT made his commitment early last fall and doesn’t have any plans on changing. “I felt like they were the first to offer and they changed my life and deserved my commitment and it is the perfect place to play and go to the next level.”
Tide fans can thank Coach Burton Burns for his involvement as the relationship he built with Davis likely helped seal the deal. When speaking about Burns, Davis says, “Coach Burns recruited me, he’s a very cool coach. I love him like family.”
If you’re wondering if Davis’ height might make him a prospect for Coach Avery Johnson on the hardwood, don’t get your hopes up. Davis is strictly a football player and laughed at the notion of competing on the basketball court.
As for what Alabama fans can expect from him? “To go in and try to become one of the greatest. I just want to do my job and do my role.”
Next weekend Davis is preparing to compete at The NIKE Football Opening at the NIKE World Headquarters.
