Is it possible to have two native Georgians emerge for Alabama in back to back seasons?
This question lies heavy on the mind of outside linebacker Dillon Lee as he enters his senior year. A native of Buford, Ga., Lee has spent the better part of his career as a reserve outside linebacker and a wild man on special teams. He got reps at inside linebacker in some games last season, but Lee’s size, experience and diversity could see him more inside this season.
Lee has been working beside Reggie Ragland and Reuben Foster in fall practice. Defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Kirby Smart praised Lee on fan day for his diversity.
At 6-foot-4, 242 pounds, Lee has the capabilities to line up as an inside, outside or strong side linebacker. He understands gap assignments and can generate pressure on quarterbacks.
It was preconceived that Lee would take over for the departing All-American linebacker C.J. Mosley in 2014, but he was hampered by a leg injury. Lee totaled 24 tackles last season.
Off-field issues haven’t been kind to Lee in his tenure. He was arrested in April 2014 for driving under the influence, and was one of two players sent home in 2013 (freshman) for a violation of team rules during the week of BCS National Championship Game.
When healthy and focused, Lee is one of Alabama’s more versatile players. He’s recorded 41 tackles, an interception, a fumble return for a touchdown and two quarterback hurries.
Ex-Alabama quarterback Blake Sims took his moment last season. The Gainesville, Ga., native navigated Alabama to a 12-win season, a Southeastern Conference title and a College Football Playoff appearance. He accounted for 3,487 passing yards and 35 total touchdowns.
A possible switch for Lee to inside linebacker gives Alabama more depth.
