It wasn’t meant to be for former Alabama standout Vinnie Sunseri in New Orleans, as the Saints’ waived him Tuesday. Sunseri sustained what appeared to be either a knee or leg injury in Sunday’s preseason game against the Houston Texans.

He was carted off the field, after covering a punt.

This isn’t the first time that Sunseri has dealt with health problems. He broke his arm during in his rookie season in 2014. Sunseri played largely on special teams, prior to the mishap.

He suffered a serious knee injury (torn ACL) during his junior season at Alabama in 2013.

Sunseri decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2014 NFL Draft.

He showed exceptional instincts at safety for Alabama from 2011-13, totaling 105 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and four interceptions. He won two national championships (2011, 2012) and a Southeastern Conference title in 2012 with the Crimson Tide.
