TUSCALOOSA–Very rarely does an entire group win an individual award, but Alabama’s unit on defense is not the average group. Coach Nick Saban has a tight-knit bunch, and one that shutdown both Leonard Fournette’s case for a Heisman Trophy and Ed Orgeron’s shot at head coaching contract last week.
The Walter Camp Foundation announced the Crimson Tide as its defensive player of the week, following the team’s 10-0 win over LSU. Alabama rendered the Tigers helpless on offense, limiting it to 125 total yards, 33 rushing yards and four third down conversions (15 attempts). Reuben Foster led the team in tackles with 12, while cornerback Marlon Humphrey totaled eight stops to guide the secondary. The Tide recorded nine tackles for loss, five sacks, three quarterback hurries and a crucial interception in the fourth quarter.
Its performance delivered the team to a 9-0 record and its sixth straight win over LSU.
Alabama’s defense becomes the second group since 2004 to earn Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week, joining the Virginia Tech Hokies—who earn the honor on Sept. 25, 2005.
