Alabama tight end says wide receiver T.J. Simmons ‘is fun to watch’

Alabama wide receiver T.J. Simmons (No. 16) with a reception during the 2017 A-Day Game: Cedric Mason - Touchdown Alabama Magazine

The depth at wide receiver looks promising for Alabama this fall.

Before taking to Bryant-Denny Stadium for last week’s A-Day game, sophomore wide receiver T.J. Simmons made serious waves throughout 15 spring workouts. He was one of multiple standouts through two scrimmages, and expects to be on the field a lot more next season.

In suiting up for the Crimson Tide’s second team offense – White – Simmons provided true freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with a dependable target. He brought in six receptions for 82 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter to give White a 7-0 advantage.

While only one of his six catches came in excess of 20 yards, Simmons snatched three passes that resulted in first downs. The Pinson, Ala., native averaged 13.7 yards per reception with his longest catch being 20 yards.

A four-star and alumnus of Clay-Chalkville High School, Simmons carries the size, (6-2, 202 pounds) speed, hands and toughness to be an elite star on the outside. After the Tide’s second scrimmage, sources equated him to former Alabama receiver ArDarius Stewart because of his ability to break tackles, run precise routes and consistently grab balls. Following the 11th spring game under head coach Nick Saban, sophomore tight end Miller Forristall discussed the work ethic and improvements that Simmons developed in the  offseason.

“He’s gained a couple of pounds, so he’s really big now,” Forristall said. “He’s fun to watch.”

With Calvin Ridley, Robert Foster and Jerry Jeudy drawing all the media attention, defensive coordinators should not lose sight on Simmons. He received the Bart Starr Most Improved Player Award following his performance, and is in great shape to get increased playing time.
