Shaun Dion Hamilton is healthy going into his senior year at the University of Alabama, and the projected starter at inside linebacker desires to do some hitting this weekend per reports.
Before getting cleared for contact back in May, Hamilton was rehabbing from a serious knee injury he suffered during the Southeastern Conference title game last season. He grew into being one the Crimson Tide’s leaders in total tackles (64), including nine for loss and two sacks.
The fleeting images he saw as a spectator on the sideline versus Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship was quarterback Deshaun Watson, head coach Dabo Swinney and the rest of the Tigers hoist its first national title since 1981. After consistently affecting Watson in the first half, struggles on offense caused Alabama’s defensive front to wear down.
Despite graduating quarterbacks to the National Football League, the Atlantic Coast Conference does return Deondre Francois to Florida State. Upon the conclusion of a 3,000-yard passing campaign (3,350, 20 touchdowns) in 2016, the sophomore looks shred the Tide’s secondary.
“We have to get to him for four quarters,” Hamilton said on Monday. “He’s a guy that does not get rattled no matter what the circumstances are. We have to keep him in contain and not let him get away. I know he’s going to be ready to play. He’s a great competitor and great quarterback.”
Florida State’s offensive line has problems with neutralizing pass rushers.
Of Francois’ seven interceptions as a redshirt freshman, four came against above average defenses – including Clemson, Louisville, Florida and Michigan.
Despite Alabama returning 17 of its 54 sacks, players like Da’Shawn Hand, Rashaan Evans, Christian Miller, Terrell Lewis and Anfernee Jennings among others possess the capability, athleticism and technique that could make Saturday’s game a long matchup for Francois.
Per the Seminoles’ starting depth chart, head coach Jimbo Fisher will rotate two redshirt freshmen on the offensive line and both individuals line up at offensive tackle.
While Hamilton mentions that the Tide will have its hands full with Francois, the ‘Noles’ front line will be in battle against Da’Ron Payne, Da’Shawn Hand and Raekwon Davis (if he plays).
Elite play under center is what’s hurt Nick Saban-coached Alabama teams in recent seasons, whether it’s passing or running. Should Francois compile a solid completion percentage, the game could be competitive.
But if not, expect the Tide to continue its trend dominance in season openers.
