After tackling a multitude of topics that ranged from Hurricane Harvey to freshman running back Najee Harris having an opportunity to play this week versus Florida State, Alabama head coach Nick Saban discussed senior defensive end Da’Shawn Hand during today’s Southeastern Conference Coaches Teleconference.
Hand, who’s expected to have a big season, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in July.
Due to the car not being in motion at the time of the arrest, Saban chose to not suspend Hand. Following the completion of his community service, the once five-star prospect is expected to start on Saturday against the Seminoles at new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Saban said on Hand since the incident. “He’s always been a good student and person, and he’s had a very good camp.”
Along with being a force on the field, Hand has been twice named to the SEC’s Academic Honor Roll and serves on Alabama’s Student-Advisory Leadership Council. He and junior Da’Ron Payne have both served as co-leaders throughout fall camp, leading others in position drills.
Hand enters this season with seven career sacks.
