It’s national awards season in athletics and after the National Basketball Association had its moment Monday, fans are beginning to vote for their favorite category in the ESPY’s.
While the event is scheduled for July 18, voting has already begun for the ESPY’s and the University of Alabama is playing a big role. Nick Saban’s decision to put then freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the College Football Playoff National Championship for Jalen Hurts in the second half paid dividends for the Crimson Tide.
He accounted for three touchdowns versus Georgia – including a 41-yard, game-winning score to wide receiver Devonta Smith for what has been branded as “2nd and 26.” The touchdown delivered Alabama to a 26-23 victory, earning the school its 17th national championship.
Tagovailoa’s connection to Smith is one of many highlights being voted on to receive an ESPY for “Best Play.” Former Tide star Tyrone Prothro was the last player in program history to earn this honor, as pulled in an incredible catch against University of Southern Mississippi in 2005.
Prothro took home the ESPY for his reception in 2006.
