One of the most electrifying individuals to come through the University of Alabama will continue making an impact in football.
After coaching wide receivers at Spanish Fort High School, former Tide star Tyrone Prothro has landed a role with receivers at Jasper High School.
News came Thursday via PrepsNet – a high school sports site – as Prothro looks to help Vikings’ head coach Brian Moore achieve success. A native of Heflin, Ala., he emerged in Mike Shula’s 2003 recruiting class as a three-star after having a strong career at Cleburne County School.
He came in as an explosive athlete and at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, Prothro brought smiles to Alabama fans inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Before his playing career was cut short due to a compound leg injury in 2005 (versus Florida), he was a big-play receiver and return specialist.
Prothro totaled 863 receiving yards (career) with five touchdowns on 58 receptions, with his finest performance coming in the 2005 season. He brought in 325 yards receiving with three scores on 17 catches – en route to the Tide notching a 10-win year (prior to sanctions).
As for his efforts in the return game, Prothro turned in 774 kick return yards for his career with one touchdown on 29 attempts. While his production in 2004 – 452 yards, one touchdown – was solid, his average of 27.6 yards per kick return in 2005 was extraordinary.
His epic touchdown reception versus University of Southern Mississippi, also known as “The Catch,” won Prothro an ESPY award in 2006 for “Best Play.” During his lone season at Spanish Fort, he helped the program obtain an 11-2 record that included a regional championship and an appearance in the third round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
