He is one strong season away from punching his ticket as a potential first round pick for the 2019 NFL Draft, but for now Jonah Williams ranks at being the lone star for Alabama football on the preseason first-team All-America list – according to an article from Sporting News.
Bill Bender, who released the piece on Monday, chose Williams over players like Tua Tagovailoa, Lyndell “Mack” Wilson and Raekwon Davis for first team selections.
Hailing from Folsom, Calif., Williams enrolled as a five-star offensive tackle in 2016 and has anchored the Crimson Tide’s front line in the last two seasons.
In 29 career starts, he’s cleared the way for 17 100-yard outings – including two 1,000-yard performances from Damien Harris.
Williams allowed just 2.5 sacks in 2017 on 831 snaps, while missing 10 assignments for a success rate of 98.6 percent. Despite the coaching staff seeing much potential in Alex Leatherwood and Matt Womack, Williams has experience at both tackle positions.
On its list of second-team selections, Tua Tagovailoa was the leading quarterback on offense and the duo of Raekwon Davis and Mack Wilson appeared on defense. Alabama was given the odds of 9 to 5 in winning the College Football Playoff this fall, per Las Vegas Super Book.
