Sizing up Alabama’s competition for College Football Playoff

© John David Mercer - USA TODAY Sports

The most exciting time in college football is three weeks away.

As the playoff committee has all four seeds locked in, the question as always is “who has the best chance of taking down Alabama?” Since the venue originated in 2014, the Crimson Tide has been a fixture in the playoff for five years and won a national title in both 2015 and 2017.

While he will not face one of his former assistants, Nick Saban is stacked against stiff competition with Lincoln Riley of Oklahoma, Brian Kelly of Notre Dame and Dabo Swinney of Clemson – which he has battled three times in the playoff.

He is scheduled to meet Riley and the Sooners on Saturday, Dec. 29 in Miami, Fla., for one of two semifinal matchups.

For the Tide, it looks for its sixth national championship under Saban and No. 18 in school history.

In Friday’s airing of In My Own Words, Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine dissects Alabama’s competition and reveals the team he thinks is balanced enough to create concern for the defending champions.
