Pair of UA players enter transfer portal

Jalen Hurts took the initiative first – in leaving Alabama for Oklahoma – however, two more University of Alabama players have followed his lead in going into the transfer portal.

According to a report from AL.com on Monday, defensive back Kyriq McDonald and long snapper Scott Meyer have both entered the portal. The two were a part of the Crimson Tide’s journey to a Southeastern Conference championship last season, but feel as though they have a chance to do more at another program.

McDonald, a rising sophomore, totaled seven tackles and one quarterback pressure through 11 games in 2018 as a redshirt freshman. He was named Special Teams Player of the Week from the coaching staff for his efforts against Mississippi State and Auburn. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 197 pounds, McDonald was rated as one of the top high school athletes in the state of Alabama.

Meyer, a rising junior, saw his lone action versus the Citadel last year.

With Thomas Fletcher as the scholarship long snapper, the native Georgian spent much of the 2018 season on the bench. Meyer was perfect on snaps for extra points and field goal attempts during his redshirt freshman season in 2017.

Alabama returns depth in its secondary with players such as Daniel Wright, Nigel Knott, Jared Mayden, Jalyn Armour-Davis and Josh Jobe among others, so losing McDonald will not be a terrible blow to the program. As for Meyer, the Tide seems to be comfortable with Fletcher and feels as though he can handle the job on punts, field goals and extra points as a long snapper.
