If you laid the points last week against South Carolina (like I did), you have my condolences. A missed extra point and a missed short field goal would have eliminated the possibility of a back-door cover, but the Gamecocks snuck a late touchdown past Alabama’s back-up defense in the last minute of the game. Let’s see if the gambling gods can give one back to Alabama bettors this weekend against Southern Miss.
Alabama sits at 1-2 against the spread this season with those two missed covers coming by two points (New Mexico State) and one point (South Carolina). The Tide have opened as a 39-point favorite this week against the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss is 2-1 both straight-up and against the spread. They defeated FCS-level Alcorn State by 28 in Week 1, lost to Mississippi State by 23 in Week 2, then picked up a nice road win over Troy as an underdog last week.
