One of the first lessons somebody learns when they are growing up is to never tell a lie. It usually only leads to harsh consequences and other misfortunes. But Alabama head coach Nick Saban is one of the lone exceptions, and if you asked him he probably wouldn’t change anything.

In 2007, Saban was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins but was also one of the top candidates for the head coaching vacancy at Alabama. On Dec. 21, 13 years ago today, Saban was asked about Alabama and proceeded to tell what would turn out to be the greatest lie of his life.

“I guess I have to say it: I’m not going to be the Alabama coach,” Saban said authoritatively. “I shouldn’t even have to comment on this. I think I’ve said this over and over and over again.”

Alabama was adamant about hiring a new head coach by January 5th of the following year. Saban and the Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga met on January 3rd to decide what his future with the team would be.

That day he accepted an 8 year $32 million contract with Alabama and hasn’t looked back since.

His decision was famously met with fury from the Miami fanbase over how to entire situation was handled. On the flip side, the people of Tuscaloosa gave a hero’s welcome upon his arrival.

Since arriving at Alabama Saban has a record of 156-23 with five national championships. Miami has a record of 84-108 with just two playoff appearances.
