With all the cancellations of the various spring sports leagues, fans have been holding out hope for the nations most popular game.
Football.
As of right now it is the only sport which has hope of beginning and ending on time due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has impacted the world greatly. But ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has his own thoughts on what the future holds for football, and he believes that it too will not be played this year.
“I’ll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I’ll be surprised if that happens,” Herbstreit said to TMZ on Friday.
“Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you’re 12 to 18 months from a [coronavirus] vaccine. I don’t know how you let these guys go into locker rooms ad let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don’t know how you can do it with the optics of it.
“As much as I hate to say it, I think we’re scratching the surface of where this thing’s gonna go.”
If Herbstreit were to be correct the NCAA would have yet another massive decision surrounding the eligibility of players but this time on a much bigger scale.
On Thursday NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell released a memo stating that the 2020 NFL Draft would not push back its date, but rather each franchise would operate remotely with the proper technology.
Whether Herbstreit’s predictions are right or wrong, it is certain that the coming weeks and months will be crucial.
