He knows how important getting back to football is, but he also does not want to rush it.
During this time of the coronavirus and not having spring football, Nick Saban has shared an idea of having practices in the summer to catch all student-athletes up to speed before starting fall camp. He continued his thoughts on Thursday morning via the Paul Finebaum Show.
Saban presented his case of wanting four weeks of summer conditioning before fall practice.
“We always have four weeks of offseason program before we go into spring practice,” Saban said on the Finebaum Show. “If we can have four weeks…our players are always in maybe the best condition that they are ever in for spring practice, because of the offseason program. I think if we have four weeks in the summer, we can certainly get ready for fall camp.”
Part of Saban’s philosophy is teaching athletes how to play a position, what to do and the importance of proper execution. For him, Alabama would not need to have a bunch of contact practices because players would take to the fundamentals.
“I think there are plenty of opportunities in fall camp to do the contact part of it,” Saban said.
“I know some people wanted to extend fall camp or have more practices or whatever, but I think that’s the most concentrated time where you have more contact because you have more practices in a shorter period of time…And there are a lot of statistics bear out that there’s more concussions, more injuries and I don’t think we want to get into that world.”
As everyone is hopeful to potentially have a college football season, Saban’s thought process is desiring a chance to work with his players at a critical time.

If the powers that be sign off on his proposal, we are in for a fun summer.
