On Monday, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and the 14 athletic directors which make up the conference, met to discuss the upcoming season.
Although a concrete decision was not made, the meeting was still a productive one according to Sankey.
“We had a productive meeting on Monday and engaged in discussions on a number of important issues that will contribute to critical decisions to be made in the weeks ahead,” said Sankey in a press release. “The ability to personally interact over the course of an entire day contributed to the productivity of the meeting.”
This was the first time since the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament was gathered in Nashville, where Sankey and the athletic directors held an in-person meeting.
Sankey has made it clear in the past few days that the conference is running out of time when it comes to making big decisions on its upcoming football season. The Ivy League and Patriot League have already cancelled their respective fall seasons, while the Big Ten and Pac-12 have all opted for a shortened, in-conference only football season.
The clock is and has been ticking for a decision to be made since all the way back in May when the SEC gathered a team of medical professionals to help get the season up and going.
Despite the current landscape of college football, and the uncertainty of what Division I sports will look like this fall, the conference believes that a decision can be made by the end of July.
“It is clear that current circumstances related to COVID-19 must improve and we will continue to closely monitor developments around the virus on a daily basis,” said Sankey. “In the coming weeks we will continue to meet regularly with campus leaders via videoconferences and gather relevant information while guided by medical advisors.
“We believe that late July will provide the best clarity for making the important decisions ahead of us.”
