Javon Baker has never been the type of player to shy away from competition and according to Nick Saban, the Georgia product has ‘done a great job’ in fall camp so far.

“Javon Baker is showing promise,” Saban said. “I think they all have. They just have to show some consistency in knowing what to do and playing with confidence. So far, Baker has had the most continuity. He missed the least amount of practice, he has been out there the most, he is just a real competitive guy. He has done a great job so far, but I am pleased with that entire core.”

Baker’s competitive nature was on display throughout his career at McEachern high school and on the 7V7 circuit as a member of Cam Newton’s 7V7 team.

Despite not enrolling early at the University of Alabama, Baker has captured the attention of several around the Alabama football program. This is not a huge surprise to those, who witnessed the amount of work Baker put in prior to enrolling like Top Shelf Performance’s wide receiver specialist, TJ Brown. Brown, who has trained NFL wide receivers, Calvin Ridley and Mecole Hartman, told Touchdown Alabama he feels Baker has a dog in him.

“Some kids do not come out of the gate, ready to dog you,” Brown said. “They have to get woke up. You have to talk to them or they have to get jammed up before they get locked in. With Javon, he is coming out of the gate trying to embarrass you. If you jam him up, he is going to come right back at you. That is why I think he is going to dominate at the net level with his competitiveness.”

Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle are expected to be the two feature wide receivers for Alabama this season. Questions surround, who will be the third guy up as Baker, John Metchie, Slade Bolden and Xavier Williams continue to battle it out to see more playng time this upcoming season.
