Along with the official announcement of the postponement of Alabama at LSU along with Texas A&M at Tennessee, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement on the surge of positive COVID-19 tests that have caused the games to move their dates.
“While it is unfortunate to have multiple postponements in the same week, we began the season with the understanding interruptions to the schedule were possible and we have remained focused throughout the season on the health of everyone around our programs,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “We must remain vigilant, within our programs and in our communities, to prevent the spread of the virus and to manage activities that contribute to these interruptions.”
These two games add to the list of growing delays the conference has seen this past week. On Monday Auburn and Mississippi State announced that it would also be moving its game due to a spike in positive tests within the Mississippi State football program.
This is also the second game LSU has had to move due to COVID-19 positive tests as the Tigers game against Florida back on Oct. 17 when the two were originally set to kickoff.
But the Tigers and the conference are now in a bit of a predicament for LSU is already using its open week on Dec. 12 for its matchup against Florida, putting the date against Alabama into question.
Something to monitor that was mentioned in the email sent out by the SEC was the statement that: “The rescheduling of games on the remaining SEC football schedule may include December 19 as a playing date.”
That specific date is when the SEC Championship was originally set to play, which possibly hints at the conference pushing back its championship game in order for teams to properly finish its seasons.
