Alabama OL, Chris Owens receives humbling honor in hometown of Arlington

Chris Owens of Alabama looks on at CFP title game for 2020 season

Chris Owens had a big impact on Alabama football in 2020.

He served at multiple spots on the offensive line, including center, and helped the Crimson Tide capture a College Football Playoff National Championship. Regardless of the global pandemic and social justice issues, Owens used his voice to create change and foster a more unified campus at the University of Alabama.

When the Tide lost Landon Dickerson to a knee injury in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game, Owens emerged and operated the front versus Notre Dame and Ohio State.

A native of Arlington, Texas, Owens came to Alabama as a four-star in 2016 from Lamar High School.

In honor of his excellence, the Arlington ISD — a public school district in North Texas — decided to have Chris Owens Day on Wednesday.

At Lamar, Owens excelled in football but he was also a star student. He prioritized academics at UA, as he made the Dean’s List five consecutive years.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and creative media and a master’s degree in sports administration. Owens was named to the SEC All-Community Service team and was a member of the SEC Leadership Committee.

He is proud to be a two-time national champion and three-time SEC champion; however, having Jeff Williams — Mayor of Arlington — honor him in this way is humbling for Owens. In February of 2016, Arlington ISD held its National Signing Day ceremony and Owens inked his letter of intent to the Crimson Tide. Five years later, the hometown hero is being honored.

Owens decided shortly after the season ended to return to school for another year.

He looks forward to helping Alabama repeat as champions.
