Will Anderson Jr. is ‘very comfortable’ in his role in year two at Alabama

He was a terror last year for opposing quarterbacks, but the best of Will Anderson Jr. is yet to come.

Now a sophomore, the former five-star is more comfortable in his role as an outside linebacker.

Anderson had to learn the defense via Zoom in his freshman season, and it helped him turned in good numbers. The native Georgian had seven sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hurries.

He was a nightmare for offensive linemen in the last six games of 2020, earning him Freshman All-SEC and Freshman All-American honors.

Anderson has added eight pounds to his 6-foot-4 frame, moving from 235 to 243 lbs. Nick Saban told reporters he ‘loves’ working with Anderson and that he sets a good example for others.

According to Anderson, he told the media on Tuesday that he is taking the next step.

“I feel very comfortable,” he said about entering his sophomore year. “I am trying to help my team and do my job consistently and be the best version of myself.”

Christian Harris and Evan Neal are both leaders on the team. The linebacker and offensive tackle have seen Anderson’s growth. As a member of the 2020 recruiting class, the talented pass rusher spends a lot of time in the film room. Coach Saban has tutored many outside linebackers, but Anfernee Jennings is Anderson’s favorite one. The two-time College Football Playoff national champion is in the National Football League with the New England Patriots.

“Anfernee Jennings is the player I watch the most,” Anderson said. “It was just how he did everything. His shocks and sheds, his ability to get off blocks, and his pass rush moves. He was a great player, and he was very talented.”

Jennings was a great player, but Anderson looks to be better. When it comes to practicing against Neal, the left tackle said it is ‘iron sharpening iron’ with Anderson. He is never satisfied with where he is, so expect a bigger season from the sophomore.
