Alabama will be without one of its most talented running backs for the rest of 2021.
Head coach Nick Saban announced during his Monday press conference that Jase McClellan is out for the season and will have surgery on his knee this week.
The knee injury was not specified.
McClellan suffered the injury in the first half of last week’s game against Ole Miss. Before leaving the game, McClellan carried the ball six times for 28 yards against the Rebels.
Following the game, Saban indicated that the injury was significant and that it was believed McClellan would miss significant time.
“Jase has a knee injury,” Saban said following the game. “The initial report on it is not good, but until we do an MRI, we won’t know for sure. He’ll probably be out for a while.”
The injury is a big blow for Alabama’s backfield as McClellan was the team’s second-leading rusher on the year with 199 yards and one rushing touchdown. He was also a big factor in the passing game as he was the team’s most dynamic receiver out of the backfield with 10 receptions for 97 yards and three touchdowns.
Fellow sophomore running back Roydell Williams and Trey Sanders will likely see their roles increase in the absence of McClellan.
