Alabama appears to be evaluating all of its options with the chance that starting center Darrian Dalcourt is unable to play against New Mexico State on Saturday.
Dalcourt suffered a sprained ankle early on in the Crimson Tide’s previous game against LSU. Chris Owens, who played center his first five years at Alabama, took over against the Tigers with Damieon George stepping in at right tackle for Owens.
Despite having someone as experienced as Owens, who started both games of the College Football Playoff last season, head coach Nick Saban is allowing others to get in on the competition.
“I do think we have competition at the position,” Saban said during the SEC Head Coaches Teleconference on Wednesday. “Chris has played there before, but we also have some young guys that have played the position that have done very well. We wanna evaluate and see what gives us the best chance to be successful in the game, and we’ll do that throughout the week.”
One of the young players potentially getting a look is sophomore Seth McLaughlin who has made a few appearances so far this season. McLaughlin has seen action in a total of five games and most recently took the field during the Crimson Tide’s homecoming game against Tennessee.
Another option could be freshman offensive lineman James Brockermeyer who joined Alabama in the class of 2021. Although he is yet to see the field this season, Brockerymeyer is a talented young player for the Crimson Tide who was rated as a four-star recruit in Touchdown Alabama’s independent recruiting rankings.
