Kohl Summerville has helped the Gordo Greenwave (AL) secure an 8-2 regular-season record and a trip to the second round of the AHSAA state playoffs by shining on both sides of the football this season.
Summerville currently holds one D1 football offer from Troy, but that is projected to change in the near future. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder has made his presence felt this season by presenting a mismatch for defenders as a receiving threat and by coming downhill with bad intentions as a hard-hitting defensive back.
The Gordo junior said he has worked on improving his game on and off the field.
“I have worked on my mental state for sure, my work ethic and the way I study the game,” Summerville said. “I am taking it more seriously than I ever did. I am also trying to improve my body, physically and learning how to use it 5 to 6 days out of the week.”
Multiple college coaches have been in contact with Summerville in recent months. They are intrigued by his impressive frame and his potential to play on either side of the football at the next level.
“I like to compete on both sides of the ball,” said Summerville. “I play corner and receiver. Coaches like me on both sides of the ball because of my athleticism and my body type.”
At 6-foot-3, Summerville fits the mold for what most D1 college coaches are looking for in a defensive back. He is long, physical and athletic. Gordo will take on Oneonta in the second round of the playoffs on Friday night, and Summerville will have an opportunity to continue his impressive season.
