On Wednesday, Mel Tucker struck gold with a brand new extension with Michigan State which puts him amongst the highest-paid coaches in college football. According to the Detroit Free Press Tucker’s deal will be worth $95 million across 10 years.

The deal is a historic one for the prior Nick Saban assistant for multiple different reasons.

Tucker’s predicted annual salary will be the largest one in the Big Ten surpassing Penn State’s James Franklin per the report. The only head coach that will be making more than Tucker would be Saban should the numbers hold up.

The new extension will also make Tucker the highest-paid Black head coach in college football surpassing Stanford head coach David Shaw according to USA Today.

There will also only be three coaches at the NFL who will have higher annual salaries than Tucker with those three being Bill Belichick (Patriots), Pete Carroll (Seahawks) and Sean Payton (Saints).

Tucker’s new deal is one that is well earned since he became the head coach for the Spartans back in 2020. Following a 2-5 record in his first season, Tucker has gotten his team back into the forefront of college football as Michigan State currently sits with a record of 9-1 and is the No. 7 team in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Prior to the deal, Tucker had been linked to possibly being a candidate for the LSU head coaching job but Michigan State was not ready to let their man walk away so quickly.

Michigan State currently controls its own destiny in terms of making the College Football Playoff as it will be able to take sole possession of the Big Ten East with a win over Ohio State this Saturday.
