Alabama came to play through the first two quarters of the SEC Championship particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Quarterback Bryce Young showed why he is amongst the leaders in the Heisman race as he did it all for the Crimson Tide in the first half against Georgia. Despite a lacking run game, Young made plays with his arm and legs to move the chains for the Crimson Tide.
The offense got things going in the second quarter in a big way as Young found wide receiver Jameson Williams for a 67-yard touchdown.
Following a three and out from the defense, Young led an 80-yard touchdown drive which ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie.
Perhaps the most surprising performance of the first half came from Alabama’s offensive line who held up strong in the passing game against a Bulldogs front that’s dominated all season. Young was not sacked through the first two-quarters of action.
Defensively, it was a mixed bag from Alabama.
At the midpoint of the second quarter, Pete Golding’s unit forced back-to-back three and outs setting up its offense to take the lead. But multiple penalties gave Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett extra chances which he took advantage of in the form of a 32-yard touchdown pass to Ladd McConkey.
On its final offensive drive of the half, the Crimson Tide suffered what could be a massive loss as Metchie went down with a lower-body injury where he went straight to the locker room.
Despite losing Metchie, Young made the big play once again with a 15-yard touchdown scramble giving Alabama a seven-point lead at the half.
