Alabama is expected to make its fourth new coaching hire of the offseason.
The Crimson Tide are expected to hire Charlotte tight ends coach Joe Cox to the same role according to a report from ESPN.
Drew Svoboda served as the team’s tight ends coach and special teams coordinator during the 2021 season. Just a few weeks ago in late January, Nick Saban opted to hire Ole Miss’ Coleman Hutzler to be Alabama’s new special team’s coordinator and now Cox will be taking over the tight ends. There is currently no word on what Svoboda’s status is with the team.
Cox, a former starting quarterback for Georgia, has several years of positional coaching experience as he began his career at Colorado State as a graduate assistant in 2015 before becoming the tight ends coach in 2016. He would serve in that role through the 2019 season before joining Will Muschamp’s staff as a tight ends coach at South Carolina in 2020.
Following Muschamp’s firing, Cox was not retained under Shane Beamer’s staff which led him to become the Charlotte 49ers tight ends coach in 2021.
Alabama has previously hired four other position coaches this offseason which includes Hutzler who will also be coaching the outside linebackers on top of the special teams, Travaris Robinson who will coach the cornerbacks and Eric Wolford who will be coaching the offensive line.
