Alabama football was able to dip into the state of Louisiana one final time in the 2022 recruiting cycle and picked up four-star tight end, Danny Lewis Jr after a hard late push.

Nick Saban stated in his press conference Wednesday that the Crimson Tide wanted to add more depth to its tight end position during the 2022 recruiting cycle. They succeeded in doing so by signing three tight-end prospects, including Lewis. Saban said he feels excited to have Lewis on board because he feels he can do everything needed to be a successful tight end at the collegiate level.
“He has been very successful as a basketball player and was very productive this year as a football player,” Saban said. “He has great size. I think he runs well. He is a good blocker. Tight end is a position where it use to be when Ozzie Newsome played, you just lined up by the tackle and put your hand in the dirt and that is what you did. Now, a tight end does that, he plays wide receiver and he also plays H-Back off the ball, which is now more like a fullback. It is really hard to find guys who can do all of those things. I think Danny has a chance to be a guy who can do all those things, but most importantly I think he is big enough to be an in-line blocker, which Cam Latu is a guy who has developed nicely in that position for us. We certainly need someone young in our program, who can do all these things as well.”
Alabama will return Cameron Latu at the tight end position next season but is in search of other options at the position after losing Jahleel Billingsley to the transfer portal. Lewis has all the tools needed to be right in the thick of things to be that second option. The Louisiana product is listed at 6-foot-4 and weighs 255 pounds. As a senior at Westgate, he helped the Tigers win a state championship by presenting a big target for his quarterback.
