Summary for spring practice

Alabama football returns Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe at quarterback.

After winning the Heisman Trophy last season, Young is undoubtedly the Crimson Tide’s starting signal-caller. However, the competition to be Alabama’s primary back-up is expected to be an intriguing one with Ty Simpson on campus.

Simpson was rated as a five-star recruit coming out of Westview High School in Martin, Tennessee. His unique playing style allowed him to be one of the most exciting high school quarterbacks to watch during the 2021 football season.

The Alabama freshman has shown he can make every throw on the field. But his ability to improvise is what makes him special. While he does not have game-changing speed, he is elusive in the pocket and knows how to avoid sacks while keeping his eyes down the field. He also can deliver some accurate throws while escaping pressure.

Simpson makes jaw-dropping plays outside the pocket, but he is equally as dynamic within it. He is comfortable and has consistently improved at working through his reads.

At 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, Simpson has a great frame. He possesses some impressive strength and can perform well in the weight room. His strength allows him to be a tough runner in the open field.

Westview won the 2A State Championship behind Simpson’s arm and legs last season. He ended his senior campaign with 2,827 passing yards and 41 passing touchdowns. He also rushed for 11 touchdowns and compiled 862 rushing yards.
