Jalen Milroe’s growth as a passer continues to encourage Nick Saban

Nick Saban described Alabama’s second scrimmage as ‘spotty’ and ‘inconsistent,’ but he is encouraged by Jalen Milroe’s growth as a passer.

The sophomore quarterback from Texas performed well in the first game-like practice and continues to make progress. Bryce Young is the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, and he looks to defend his crown as the Heisman Trophy winner. Young wants to win a College Football Playoff National Championship as a starter, but the Tide knows an NFL future awaits him.

Milroe tossed a touchdown pass to Jermaine Burton in the first scrimmage, but he suffered from dropped passes today at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The 6-foot-2, 212-pounder threw a couple of interceptions, but the turnovers were not his fault. According to Coach Saban, Milroe has been ‘a lot better in his decision making,’ and he ‘plays with more confidence’ because of his knowledge.

“Jalen is doing some good things,” Saban said. “I am encouraged by the progress he has made. Jalen makes a lot of plays. He threw the ball, it hit the guy in the hands, the ball popped up, and somebody intercepted it. It was not his fault. He has a much better command of the offense.”

Milroe has looked good this spring and has locked himself into the primary backup role. He’s been dropping dimes to receivers, and Alabama needs to incorporate him more in the offense for the upcoming season.

His development has been a pleasant sight for Saban, and Milroe’s showing he’s more than an athlete. Crimson Tide fans will be excited to watch him operate an offense in next week’s spring game. SEC Network+ will have the call at 2:00 p.m.
