Nick Saban had previously mentioned how much more comfortable backup quarterback Jalen Milroe has been throughout spring practice and now Milroe finally had the chance to show the public how much he’s progressed.
During the first half of the 2022 A-Day Game, Milroe impressed with his much-improved touch and accuracy with his arm. Last season as a true freshman, Milroe primarily displayed his athletic ability in his limited playing time as he still had ways to go as a passer. But so far today, the Katy, TX., native tore up the second-team defense.
Through the first two-quarters, Milroe completed five of seven passes for 92 yards while connecting with wide receiver Christian Leary for a 52-yard touchdown. Leary leads both teams with three catches for 73 yards and the score.
Milroe wasn’t the only member of the White team that came to play as the first-team defense outshined the first offense. Bryce Young and the Crimson offense were held to just one rushing yard through two quarters and were also unable to get into the endzone.
Young, who is working with three new wide receivers this time around, was held to just 77 passing yards while tossing an interception to Jordan Battle during the first quarter. The 2021 Heisman trophy winner was able to find Georgia transfer wide receiver Jermaine Burton twice in the first half for a total of 36 yards.
The first team offense which has seen a ton of turnover itself from last season struggled to block the White team’s defensive front in Will Anderson and Jamil Burroughs who each had a pair of sacks in the first half.
With two more quarters to go the White team goes to the half leading the Crimson team 16-0.
