He is back to being explosive after a knee injury, but it was good hearing him Thursday.

Jase McClellan, a junior running back, took the podium to address reporters.

He switched from No. 21 to No. 2 in the offseason and has looked great in fall practice. McClellan served as Alabama’s most versatile back in 2021, totaling three touchdown receptions before hurting his knee against Mississippi. The Crimson Tide took a step back in the passing game without him, and he endured a grueling rehab process. Coach Nick Saban told the media McClellan has returned to his old self. The 5-foot-11, 212-pounder confirmed his head coach’s words by describing when he felt he was back.

“When we started fall camp, getting back into the pads, seeing the movement, I could still balance and run, I felt like I was back,” McClellan said. “After the second scrimmage and seeing how I played, I feel great.”

McClellan trained on his speed and contact balance with former Auburn standout Brad Lester. Brian Robinson is in the National Football League, but Alabama has a unique duo with McClellan and Jahmyr Gibbs. It may not be the typical one, two-punch Tide fans are used to, however, it will be something to watch. McClellan discussed how he and Gibbs complement each other.

“We are both great receiving backs,” he said. “We can run through the holes. He (Jahmyr Gibbs) has speed, and I add power.”

He is a marquee talent, but McClellan does not mind sharing responsibilities with Gibbs.

“We welcomed Gibbs in like a brother,” he said. “He wanted to join us and we are thankful to have him. He adds something special to the group.”

McClellan takes pride in his versatility as a receiver. He loves making himself available out of the backfield for Bryce Young when no wide receivers are open. Young missed his safety valve last year, but the reigning Heisman winner will have McClellan back this season.
