What Kobe Prentice starting means for Alabama?

Alabama football’s true freshman, Kobe Prentice was listed as a starter at wide receiver on the Crimson Tide’s depth chart Monday, and the Calera High School product is expected to bring elite speed to Alabama’s offense.

Prentice earned an offer from Alabama in July of 2021 after he impressed the Tide’s coaching staff at camp by running a ‘4.38 forty’ and making some impressive catches during one-on-ones. He signed with Alabama in December, and he enrolled during the summer. The former four-star recruit has come in and turned some heads in Tuscaloosa and earned a starting spot ahead of Alabama’s first game.

At 5-foot-10 and 171 pounds, Prentice has a compact frame with a strong build. As a senior at Calera, he had 1,229 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns. He is listed as Alabama’s H receiver on their depth chart. The H receiver has typically been used as a slot wide receiver as Jaylen Waddle and Slade Bolden previously occupied the position.

Prentice has a similar playing style to Waddle and Bolden with his elite quickness and ability to be elusive with the football in his hand. He also has breakaway speed and is an effective route runner who runs his routes smoothly and under control. The true freshman gives Alabama another home run hitter who can make some exciting plays with the football.

Before enrolling at UA, Prentice told Touchdown Alabama he wanted to make an immediate impact in Tuscaloosa.

“I want to get on the field as a freshman and come in and make an early impact,” Prentice said.

Former Alabama wide receiver, Mike McCoy echoed Prentice’s statement as he trained him before he officially enrolled at UA.

“He has a chance to come in and contribute right away as long as he is falling in love with that playbook, and he is asking the right questions,” McCoy said. “As far as talent, ability and mindset, he has all of those.”

Multiple freshman wide receivers have come in and made an immediate impact in Tuscaloosa. Prentice looks to be the next with him listed as a starter heading into the Tide’s matchup with Utah State.
