After missing a majority of fall camp, Alabama tight end Cameron Latu is making his return to the team.
Head coach Nick Saban shared during his Wednesday press conference that Latu is 100 percent after dealing with a knee issue during August and will suit up against Texas this Saturday.
“He’s doing well,” Saban said. “100 percent. Runs well. Moves well. Practiced quite a bit last week–thought he needed another week of practice. You know, this will be his first game so it’ll be a little different for him than some of the other guys got to play last week.
“But from a health standpoint, we think he’s ready to go.”
At the beginning of fall camp, Saban shared that Latu would miss an indefinite amount of time with a knee issue which led to him missing the team’s first game of the season against Utah State.
Filling in for Latu was sophomore Robbie Ouzts and JUCO transfer Miles Kitselman. Kitselman was the only tight end to record any receptions as he caught two passes for 18 yards in the 55-0 win over the Aggies.
The Crimson Tide will now get back one of its more experienced pass catchers on offense from a season ago and a solid red zone threat in Latu.
After transitioning from linebacker to tight end, Latu was the team’s main option at tight end in 2021 where he caught 26 passes for 410 yards and eight touchdowns.
Latu won the starting job last season over Jahleel Billingsley who is now a member of the Longhorns after entering the transfer portal following the season.
