Nick Saban expressed Thursday he feels the act of people criticizing coaches for play calls is one of the most overrated things in sports.
Saban got on the topic when he was discussing Alabama’s last playcall against Texas A&M Thursday on “Hey Coach.” The Alabama head coach called timeout before the play happen to change the Crimson Tide’s defensive backs’ leverage. When breaking down the play, he gave insight into why he feels criticizing coaches’ play calls is overrated.
“I think that is probably one of the things that is the most overrated, I think in sports, you know people criticize calls,” Saban said. “You didn’t use the guy right. You didn’t do this right, you didn’t do that right.’ But really what it comes down to more often than not is execution. You know, Did you execute what you did correctly? Our guys executed that really well in a difficult situation in the game. They had enough poise and composure to go out there and do it exactly like it was supposed to get done and everybody did it, and we had success on the play, but that is true on most every play in the game. If you execute it properly and everybody does what they are supposed to do, you usually have a successful play. “
Members of Alabama’s staff have not escaped criticism from Tide fans this season, especially Alabama’s offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. O’Brien recently faced criticism from Alabama fans after Jalen Milroe’s performance against Texas A&M. Pete Golding, Alabama’s defensive coordinator, has had his fair share of criticism as well.
