Josh Heupel loves to spread defenses out, run an uptempo offense, and take shots in the vertical passing game.
He does this well as an offensive-minded head coach for the University of Tennessee.
Heupel attacked Alabama’s defensive secondary with big plays last week, but the play that stunned everyone at Neyland Stadium, on national television, and the Crimson Tide was a tribute to old-school football. The Volunteers lined up in an I-formation play for one of its touchdowns in a goalline situation. Alabama looked confused about the play, and the onslaught was on from there.
Coach Nick Saban explained it during Thursday’s radio show. No one on this Tide team has seen an I-formation look before, but Alabama fans wondered why no one called a timeout. Saban said the players ‘actually did not know what to do.’ James Spann, an Emmy Award-winning meteorologist, was the celebrity guest on Saban’s show. Spann told Saban ‘that’s old school right there.’

It was embarrassing to see it happen on the field, especially when the media expects Alabama to be prepared for everything.
The Tide has turned the page to Mississippi State. Alabama is set for a bounce-back game on Saturday.
