Much like the 2021 season, Alabama is lined up across Mississippi State following a difficult loss. And if last season proved anything, the Crimson Tide typically have success against the Bulldogs following its defeat.
That good fortune carried over for at least the first half of Saturday’s contest, as Alabama was able to keep the explosive plays in check.
What’s usually a pass-happy attack from Mike Leach’s air raid offense, Mississippi State caught Alabama’s defense off guard early on with some well-placed runs that kept drives alive for the Bulldogs. It also set out to dominate the time of possession as it kept the ball for nearly triple the time compared to Alabama.
Will Rogers was able to lead the offense into Alabama territory on a few occasions, but it was the Crimson Tide’s defense that answered the call on fourth down as Leach opted to play aggressively in the first half.
Early on, all eyes were on Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks who got his first career start with the Crimson Tide. Through two quarters, Ricks has shown to be as advertised as he recorded three pass breakups.
As the defense got the Bulldogs off the field, Alabama’s offense took advantage of promising field positioning while being led by the arm of quarterback Bryce Young. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner flashed his electrifying ability to keep plays alive outside the pocket as he connected with JoJo Earle for a 30-yard touchdown which was a sign of things to come.
Young also connected with Traeshon Holden for a score while running back Jahmyr Gibbs scampered in on the ground for a 19-yard touchdown.
At the end of the first, Alabama leads Mississippi State 24-0.
