Payne becomes the first player this off-season to receive a franchise tag. He is projected to make $18.937 million on the tag as he’s coming off his best season in the National Football League.
The 6-foot-3, 320-pounder recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss in 2022 — earning his first Pro Bowl selection. As a former first-round pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, Payne has grown into an exceptional lineman in the pros.
The Birmingham (Ala.) native came to the University of Alabama in 2015 as a five-star recruit from Shades Valley High School. Payne made the SEC’s All-Freshman Team in 2015 and received first-team All-SEC honors in 2017.
He assisted the Crimson Tide to two College Football Playoff National Championships in 2015 and 2017.
