He presents one side of himself on a football field.
At the University of Alabama, Bryce Young was calm, cool, and collected. He navigated an offense with accuracy, precision, timing, and quick decisions that led to success. Young worked a lot on the fly, making alterations at the line of scrimmage, evading massive defensive linemen and linebackers, victimizing defensive backs with his eyes, and making new fans across college football. He is known as a winner, but one of his former teammates gave reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine a different lens into the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner. Jordan Battle, a safety, highlighted a rare quality about Young.

“A lot of people don’t know that he’s funny,” Battle said about Young. “If y’all do know, he is funny. He is a funny guy. I was just talking to him yesterday and I said to him, ‘a lot of people don’t know how funny you are.’ He does not express it, but behind closed doors, he’s a funny guy. He’s very open to his teammates. He is always inviting us over to his apartment to have bonding time and grow relationships on and off the field. So, I would describe him as one of those cool guys.”

Battle played with Young for three years. He watched the California native grow into one of the most elite quarterbacks in college football. He does not show his personality much, but having someone in a leadership position who can have fun provides a new element in an NFL locker room. He has the on-field traits of a great signal-caller, but his humor may win him more style points with veterans in the league. It will be interesting to see the teams Young meets with at the Combine.
