Ty Simpson will have an opportunity to compete to be Alabama football’s next starting quarterback with the competition set to begin in the spring.
Simpson is a former five-star recruit out of Westview High School in Martin, Tennessee. He returns to Alabama for his second season as a redshirt freshman.
The Tennessee product played in four games for the Crimson Tide in 2022, mostly in the fourth quarter. He completed four of his five passing attempts.
Before signing a National Letter of Intent to play football at the University of Alabama, Simpson was considered a magician disguised as a quarterback with his ability to make exciting and unconventional throws while scrambling. The Alabama quarterback was named the Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year after throwing for 2,827 yards and 41 touchdowns with just three interceptions during the 2021 high football season. He also rushed for 862 yards and 11 touchdowns on 92 carries en route to leading Westview to a state championship as a senior.
Simpson was a five-star recruit, who held more than 35 D1 offers. He chose to commit to Alabama in February 2021 over Tennessee and Clemson, who were among his final schools.
Westview High School head coach Jarod Neal described Simpson’s game as unique when he was his starting quarterback.
“It is different and special,” Neal told Touchdown Alabama in February 2021. “His ability to avoid a sack is really good. Every now and then, you get nervous when he does that because sometimes he will get caught and get sacked, but he also gets away a lot. His throwing ability is very good on the run, and he can make some tough throws.”
Simpson is expected to make a strong push to be Alabama’s next signal-caller, but he has also always kept in mind the fact he may have to sit and wait.
“Whether I start my freshman year, my fifth-year senior year, I do not really care,” Simpson said as a senior. “It is the fact I get to go down there and learn from the best coach of all time, be like Mac (Jones) you can say, learn from Tua and Jalen. It will be Bryce, Paul and Jalen for me, just trying to make my game better.
