Last week’s viral touchdown pass in Alabama’s spring football practice brings an interesting question.
What are Jalen Milroe’s chances of locking up the starting quarterback job in the spring?

Before the viral video made it to social media, some pegged Ty Simpson as the choice to start.
The video has people discussing what looks to be improved accuracy and ball placement from Milroe. However, can Milroe drop perfect passes enough to secure the starting quarterback job before fall camp? Greg McElroy is the lone signal-caller in the Nick Saban era that won a starting quarterback competition in spring practice. He simply separated himself from Star Jackson with his experience in the system, knowledge of the system, and performance in practice. Other quarterback battles for the Crimson Tide either went deep into fall camp or took the first couple of games in the regular season to decide a winner.
Milroe’s experience in matchups against Arkansas and Texas A&M from 2022 help him.
He has seen live-action and can draw from those moments. Alabama’s first scrimmage of spring ball is Friday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game-like practice provides Milroe a chance to separate himself from Simpson. If he commands the offense, protects the football, and makes explosive plays, he greatly improves his chances of earning the starting job in spring practice.
