Nick Saban signed a class of incredible freshmen in this recent recruiting cycle for the University of Alabama football program.

Of the 10 five stars in the class, seven are on defense. People have spoken highly about defensive back Caleb Downs becoming a potential starter in the secondary. Coach Saban highlighted him after Friday’s scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium as the native Georgian is getting an opportunity as a safety. Downs is a playmaker, but does the Crimson Tide have another defensive freshman impact player to watch in the fall? James Smith, a five-star defensive tackle, had a lot to say in the first game-like practice.

Smith, like Downs, earned one diamond from Justin Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine, meaning he projects as an “immediate contributor and game changer.” The 6-foot-3, 296-pounder was a bully up front at IMG Academy and Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. Smith displays explosive power, speed, and strong hands to rip offensive linemen away from him.

He chose Alabama over Auburn, Georgia, and Florida State.

Alabama has produced impressive defensive linemen, including Marcell Dareus, Terrence Cody, A’Shawn Robinson, Jonathan Allen, Jarran Reed, Da’Ron Payne, Quinnen Williams, Jesse Williams, and Christian Barmore. Smith showed in the first scrimmage he may be next in line. Per sources, TDA learned he collected two sacks from working first team and second team.

One source sees Smith having a ‘Marcell Dareus type of impact’ as a true freshman. He could become a co-starter at nose tackle with Jaheim Oatis if he keeps progressing. At the worst, Smith will be No. 2 behind Oatis and should get a lot of reps.

Tide fans need to keep their eyes on Smith moving forward.
