A former Alabama wide receiver is looking to redo his rookie season in the pros on his terms.
John Metchie, a native Canadian, missed last season after it was announced in July that he got diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. He took well to his treatment and kept a positive attitude. Metchie, a former four-star in Alabama’s 2019 signing class, got selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He had a good college career with the Crimson Tide, helping the program to two Southeastern Conference Championships (2020, 2021) and a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2020. Metchie finished his career in the top 10 all-time in school history for catches (155) and receiving yards (2,081), ranking him at No. 7. He had a team-high 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021.
DeMeco Ryans, Metchie’s new head coach in Houston, says the receiver will be involved in the offseason program.

“John is doing fine,” Ryans said in a press conference. “With John, it’s like every player, we will take it one day at a time. We will see where he can grow and where he can be when the time comes. When the season comes, we will see where he is.”
Metchie wants to return to football, but his recovery is going well. Alabama fans and Texans fans hope to see him.
